WEBINAR: Maximum Quality at Maximum Speed - A Novel Approach to Freeze-Drying Cycle Design
In this webinar, Prof. Wolfgang Friess will introduce you to the field of pharmaceutical freeze-drying with a focus on process design. He will outline the critical phases of a freeze-drying cycle and present the impact of formulation aspects and process settings on the product quality.
Next, Dr. Brecht Vanbillemont will elaborate on a novel freeze-drying cycle design approach recently established at Coriolis Pharma. The approach applies a design space of the primary drying phase, which guarantees maximum product quality. Dr. Vanbillemont will explain the major sources of process variability in the primary drying phase and will apply that knowledge to design robust protocols. He will showcase the model-based optimization strategy by presenting two distinct case studies.
You will learn about...
- the basic aspects of lyophilization/freeze-drying process
- the impact of formulation and process settings on product quality
- sources of variability in the lengthy primary drying phase
- a novel strategy established at Coriolis Pharma to design robust and fast cycles
The duration of this webinar is 1 hour and will include an extended Q&A session.

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Friess
Speaker
Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Frieß is an expert in protein formulation development, stability and processing, drying technologies including freeze-drying and spray-drying as well as drug delivery. Since 2001, he is a professor for Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmaceutics at the LMU Munich. Prof. Frieß has collected more than 30 years of experience in pharmaceutical technology while working at the University of Erlangen (Germany), Genetics Institute – now Pfizer (Andover, MA, USA), and the University of Illinois (Chicago, IL, USA). He is the co-editor of the EJPB (European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics) and has published over 150 research papers, patents and book chapters.
Dr. Brecht Vanbillemont
Speaker
Dr. Brecht Vanbillemont is a senior lyophilization scientist at Coriolis with a focus on process and formulation development. He is a licensed pharmacist since 2014 and has a Qualified Person (QP) license since 2016. Dr. Vanbillemont received his doctoral degree at Ghent University under the supervision of Prof. Thomas De Beer with a research topic on continuous freeze-drying of parenterals and orally disintegrating tablets. In December 2016, he received a personal Doctoral grant for Strategic Basic (SB) Research from the FWO (Scientific Research Fund Flanders). During his doctoral education, he did a visiting scholarship of seven months at the University of Colorado under supervision of Prof. John Carpenter.
